Your project exam
The total exam time depends on which project it is, and the number of students. Examples (small sample size) of times previously assigned by ITU:
- MSc thesis - 50 minutes
- BSc thesis or MSc research project, 1 student - 40 minutes
- BSc thesis or MSc research project, 2 students - 1 hour 20 minutes
Veronika will tell you in advance who the external examiner is (or internal censor, in case of the research project).
The exam time is made up of (approximately):
- A short (10-15 minutes) presentation with slides (as a group, if it is a group project). The main goal is to give an idea of what you did in the project.
- There is no need to present all the details - focus on the motivation for the project, main ideas behind the methods, main results and discussion. You can also see some tips in the "writing tips” file in Project hand-in
- You can have back-up slides with extra results
- Please add slide numbers!
- We are not so much assessing your presentation skills, it is only a small part of the project objectives and is meant for the examiners to refresh their impression of your project, and as a starting point for the rest of the discussion
- Some general/clarification questions, if the project is a group project, all students are present
- In principle, individual questions, 15 minutes of questions per student. It is possible that this is still done with the whole group present, but a student might get directed questions. Veronika will tell you beforehand what the plan is.
- 5 minutes discussion between Veronika and the external examiner/internal censor
- 5 minutes for giving the grade/feedback to the students
- In practice, especially with groups the exam time can be a bit shorter in total, due to several parts done jointly
